I was born in Fujisawa, Kanagawa, Japan. I majored in Education at university and worked at a public deaf school after graduation, which was when I first encountered those who used Japanese sign language (JSL). It took a while to be used to communicating in JSL. Unfortunately, since I was a non-regular worker, I had to leave the school after one year.

I moved to Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, in 2017. One day I went to see a judo tournament in Nepal, and met deaf and hard of hearing children sitting next to my seat. They were having a conversation using Nepali sign language. It was totally different from JSL so I couldn’t understand and talk either. I found an interpreter there and asked her where I can study NSL and went to school she suggested for six months.

My experience of having to leave a Japanese deaf school has been inspiring me to work for Nepali deaf communities. Since I love reading and writing, I work as a writer and editor as well as photographer at DEAF SHIRU.
